The city was manned by a mixed force of soldiers and civilian volunteer totaling two thousand men under the command of Mexican General Zaragoza. The French had landed an army of ten thousand including elite units of the French Foreign Legion. They suffered losses due to swamp fevers reducing their battle ready numbers to a little over seven thousand for the planned siege of Puebla. The world’s military leaders were shocked when the Mexicans triumphed over the French, forcing them to retreat to the coast.

Although a larger army numbering of thirty thousand commanded by General Bazaine, arrived a few months later succeeded in destroying the forts at Puebla and occupying all of Mexico, The stunning victory gave the Mexican people the pride and spirit to continue resisting during the five years of war that followed.
