In the first part of his memoir, ON THE DAY THE DUTCH SURRENDERED, he recounted how Lady C, who had artistic pretensions, ordered him to pose naked in the woods, sketched him, then shamelessly exploited her social position seduce him. He recalled his first painful encounter with her relatives, especially her grandmother, the eccentric Dowager Lady Topbottom.

He movingly described his life with Lady C after she and her husband, the sixteenth baronet, had divorced. Excluded from fashionable society, they settled in a house provided by Lady C’s family, in Briarmains, the small Yorkshire town portrayed by Charlotte Bronte in her novel SHIRLEY. Lady C’s passion for Woodiss did not diminish ad the couple enjoyed a loving and contented life together until Lady C’s death at a tragically early age.Woodiss continued his story in AFTER LADY C.

Discharged from the British Army, a single man again, yet grieving deeply for his wife, he fell under the influence of an extreme millenarian sect, some of whose members took a close interest in his past. The lovers’ story had been fictionalized by several authors, who had tended to emphasize Woodiss’s reputed sexual potency and remarkable physical attributes. Woodiss deeply resented the way he had been depicted.

He was regarded he believed, as a ‘ravening sexual beast’ and that this produced unfortunate reactions in the women he met. To his distress he was preyed on by women of all ages, from a teenage housemaid, through whom he tried to obtain a pair of rare monkeys, to an aging Irish widow who believed he could persuade her son, a dissolute Glaswegian doctor, to enter the priesthood. He described the development of his love affair with Miriam, a beautiful young spiritualist, who claimed that she received messages from his dead wife instructing her to comfort him.It was his misfortune to be drawn to a young schoolteacher who was a member of the sect, a classic blonde beauty who seems to have suffered from a severe form of nymphomania.

The outcome of this encounter, which Woodiss described in painful detail n THE WHORE OF THE TABERNACLE, the final volume of the trilogy, provided a dramatic climax to his story. The manuscript came to light only recently, after the death of an old man who was the son of one of Woodiss’s drinking companions.

It has been edited by George Dalrymple, an authority on the period. Mr. Dalrymple has also provided an Introduction to the work, and this is included in the first volume of the trilogy.
